TOPIC: EATING DISORDERS
A course for the 9th - 10th grade

Viden: Eleven har viden om gambitter til emneskift og til at tage og fastholde ordet
THE TOPIC IN HEADINGS:
- The students must acquire knowledge about various eating disorders
- They must listen to and understand authentic spoken tv programmes, such as Dr. Phil, Oprah, BBC documentary, Supersize vs. Superskinny etc.
- The students will be divided into groups of eight; each group again divided into pairs and working with one of the eating disorders anorexia, bulimia, obesity or orthorexia
- Each pair presents ‘their’ eating disorder to the rest of the group
- The listeners in the group must ask clarifying, elaborating questions
- Class discussion on the topic
- The course end up with the students writing an essay or a contribution to debate on the topic
LESSON PLAN:
Lessons no 1 - 2
Before:
- Quick brainstorm on the topic - set up vocabulary on eating disorders in quizlet.com
While:
- Vocabulary training on quizlet.com (four tasks in “study” and to in “play”)
After:
- Picking up on pronunciation
Lesson no 3
Before:
- In class, talk about how to take notes
While:
- Watch the appetizer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gW61v4oePw
- Pick up on the British pronunciation
- Watch the appetizer again
- Take notes
After:
- Did your notes function?
- Did you get all the facts?
- What could you do better?
Lessons no 4 - 6 (and at home)
Before:
- How to find a good source/case - pairs and class
- How to find focus points for the presentation (search for answers using where, when, what, who, why etc.)
While:
- Research for good sources
- Finding facts
- Transfer into PowerPoint presentation, length about. five minutes
After:
- Difficulties in the process
Lessons no 7 - 8
Before:
- How to make a good, oral presentation - brainstorm
- Introduction to the procedure
- The class is divided into groups of eight
- The first pair start presenting their work
- The remaining six listen while noting what to ask afterwards
- After the presentation, the remaining six ask their clarifying questions
While:
- Presentations and questions
After:
- What went well?
- What could be improved? How?
Homework for the next lesson:
- Prepare the students for a discussion in class
- Repetition of the three forms of appeal (logos, ethos and pathos)
- Prepare arguments pro/con: Is eating disorders okay?
- Write at least two arguments in each category
Lessons no 9 - 10
Before:
- Expressing-opinion-gambits according to sheet handed out (see enclosure)
- Refresh your arguments
While:
- Discuss in your groups: four (pros) and four (cons)
- Discuss in class
After:
- Picking up on the discussion
Lesson no 11
Evaluation/homework:
- Introduction to written assignment about eating disorders
- Essay or
- Contribution to debate
- Remember to focus on expressing your opinion
- Start writing
- Finish at home and hand in
